Hello World!

Hello there. My name is Axel Räntilä and I'm going to be talking about my the game project that I'm currently working on.

I'm currently developing a turn-based strategy prototype using Unreal Engine 4. Gameplay wise, the prototype plays out similar to the combats in XCOM: Enemy Within. The ultimate goal of the prototype is to test if you can make an interesting twist to the design of an XCOM-like prototype. And by that I mean that if it is possible to make it more interesting than "Find the enemy, keep shooting until you kill them all". It might not involve giving the player new forms of objects altogether, it could very well be trying out different things to make the road there more interesting.

Now, I still think that XCOM is still a great game. I also think that the Long War mod for Enemy Within is also great. The reason for this is because they make the combat and non-combat elements (like managing your base) work really well together. And it's really well-executed in my opinion. However, the combat elements is in a vacuum "Find your enemy. Kill them before they kill you". And I want to test if you can make the combat part more interesting somehow.

I have already the very fundamentals of a turn-based strategy game working in Unreal Engine 4 (thanks to a toolkit on the Unreal Marketplace), so the focus from this point on will be on what could be a possible twist. However the main focus for this project will be on proof of concept regarding the design. I'm not an artist, so the graphics in the prototype will not be winning any awards. And since I want to test something as a proof of concept, millimeter precision regarding balance is not a major concern (although I will try to keep things as balanced as possible). I have some ideas that might work out, now I just have to implement them into the prototype.
